Facts About AardvarksAardvarks (ARD-varks) are predators that eat insects. Adult aardvarks can reach six to 7 feet in length, 3 feet In height and wiegh 120 pounds. They are hairless mammals with big snouts and rabbit-like ears. Similar to the South American Anteater, aardvarks have foot-long, sticky tongues, which they use to capture ants and termites.The Aardvark (Orycteropus afer or "Digging foot") is sometimes called an "antbear." Native to Africa, this medium-sized mammal's life span is about ten years. Aardvarks are nocturnal, forest dwellers. They have one or two young at a time, usually at the start of every rainy season. The mother, called a bear, raises her babies in the burrows where they make their homes. Young aardvarks start digging their own burrows when they are six months old.
